Here are some simple tips for cleaning your showers naturally along with DIY Natural Shower Cleaners.

The bathroom is one place that dirt and grime build up fairly quickly and unfortunately, a lot of cleaners for this room are filled with harsh chemicals. In a room where we bath our children and get squeaky clean ourselves, it makes sense to use non-toxic cleaners whenever possible.

There are a lot of alternatives to the typical commercial cleaners out there that you can make yourself! Here are some natural ways to clean your shower as well as my tips for keeping it clean.

Shower Cleaning Tips

Use tools to do a lot of the work rather than chemical cleaners:

Homemade Shower Cleaner Ideas

Make a gentle exfoliant cleaner with a couple of simple household ingredients– If you love castile soap as much as I do, you will love this recipe for DIY Soft Scrub from Saved By Grace blog.

It’s super easy to make and is great for gently scrubbing away grime. Lemons can work wonders on fixtures in the shower– Andrea Dekker has a great tip for cleaning your shower and tub fixtures: use lemons!

The acidity can break up most hard water spots and stains. Clean your shower head with just vinegar– Use Lifehacker’s tip for getting rid of hard water spots. Simply tie a plastic bag (I like to use one that’s already been used and rinsed out as a way to reuse it) filled with vinegar to your shower head and leave overnight. It will break up any deposits!

Make this mixture of shower cleaner and keep it in your shower– Popsugar made this awesome DIY shower cleaner and placed it into a dish scrubbing wand to place in your shower. You can use it to give your shower a simple scrub down after you use it.

Tips for Keeping Your Shower Clean

Use a towel or squeegee to dry your shower after using it.

I keep a squeegee in my shower so that I can use it after I am done. This helps with keeping mildew under control and even keeps soap scum less likely to build up. If you don’t want to use a squeegee, just simply use your towel to give it a good drying instead.

Use a natural water repellent on your shower walls.

Just like with your car, you can use a water repellent to keep water off your walls to keep them from creating deposits from hard water. I like Green Earth Technologies Rain Repellent. It’s 100% bio-based ingredients and all you do is spray your shower walls. Make sure to not spray it on the floor, though, as it could make them a slip hazard. You can also use some citrus oil on your fixtures to keep them from building up with deposits.
